Real Time

The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov, a play that because of what we talked about in class I wasn’t looking forward to reading.

Something I understood from the class was that events occurred in real time, which I immediately related to the popular TV series 24. In this series the narrator states just at the beginning of each episode “events occur in real time, the following takes place between (and states the hour of the day)”. Then I realized a something that is fairly obvious, that 24 is a popular prime-time American show, and that those “real time” events aren’t the same as in The Cherry Orchard. The play is set in a pace similar to no other work I have ever read. This is exactly what I thought would happen, the actions the characters take are in real time. Five minutes of reading are the equivalent to five minutes in the play.

This is a new style of work we are reading. And it’s interesting to see how it turns out, because I don’t see how much can happen at the pace the play is set. I don’t expect a lot of events, nor thrill in the play.

  1. I'm glad you recgonize the singularity of Chekhov.

Take a look at this sentence. What could be improved?

"I don’t expect a lot of events, nor thrill in the play."
